빌 에반스와 토니 베넷의 듀엣은 1975년과 1977년 두 번에 걸쳐 음반으로 제작되었습니다.
더 없이 친밀해보이는 두 사람은 사진 속에서부터 그들의 무르익은 연주를 발산하는 것만 같습니다.
빌 에반스와 토니 베넷의 첫 만남은 1962년 케네디 대통령이 주최한
백악관 스페셜 재즈 콘서트의 백 스테이지에서였습니다.
토니 베넷은 당초 빌 에반스 외에도 키보디스트 존 번치를 녹음에 참여시키고자 했으나,
존 번치가 거절해서 빌 에반스 듀엣으로만 진행하게 되었다고 합니다.
존 번치는 빌 에반스의 명성을 앞세운 이번 프로젝트에 불쾌함감을 드러낸 것으로 알려졌습니다.
토니 베넷이 오페라식으로 재즈 발라드하는 것을 그리 즐기지는 않습니다만,
적어도 이 음반들 만큼은 충분히 들을 가치가 있습니다.
1975년에 발매된 The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album와 77년의 Together Again (토니베넷이 만든 레이블 Improv Records에서 출시)을 합친 컴플리트 앨범은 2009년에 출시되었는데요,
오리지널 음반에는 없는 20여개의 얼터네이트 테이크와 2개의 보너스 트랙이 추가로 수록되어 있으며
훨씬 더 다양하고 풍부한 두 사람의 연주를 감상할 수 있어 적극 추천합니다.
